Abstract

1,243,944. Centrifugal separators; test tube holder. G. EBERLE [trading as ANDREAS HETTICH]. 16 June, 1970, No. 29071/70. Headings B1X and B2P. A carrier for specimen-containing test-tubes and capable of being pivotably suspended on a centrifuge head comprises a U-shaped stirrup 1, Figure 1, having a base plate 2 provided with upstanding arms 4 adjacent the free ends of which are mounted lateral pins 3 for pivotal engagement in grooves 18 in the centrifuge head 17, Figures 7 and 12, a beaker 5 for insertion in a positively locking manner in the stirrup and a holder 6 for the test-tubes 15 for insertion in beaker, the holder having openings 11 formed in the lower portions of its side walls. The stirrup may be of light metal or plastics and the base plate and arms may be secured together by screws or rivets or by welding. The pins 3 may be screwed or rivetted to the arms 4. In case of breakage of a test-tube during centrifuging, the beaker 5 serves to receive the contents of the test-tube and its broken parts. The beaker may be made of transparent plastics and is provided in its opposite side walls 8, 9 with grooves 10 which receive the stirrup arms 4 so as to prevent dislodgment of the beaker. The holder 6 may be made of light plastics and is formed in its upper part 13 with holes 14, Figure 2, for receiving the test-tubes 15 which rest at their lower ends on a pad 16 loosely placed on the bottom 12 of the holder. In a modification, Figure 10, the arms 28 of the stirrup carry an upper frame 30 and the stirrup may be dismensioned to receive one or four beakers. Four test-tube holders may be mounted in a single beaker or one holder may be mounted in each of four beakers. The base plate may be provided with flanges 32 or other receiving parts such as pieces, bars or cams for positioning and holding the beaker or beakers. Alternatively, a trough, Figure 11 (not shown), may be secured by screws to the base plate. In Figure 12, the head 17, on which a testtube carrier is shown pivotally suspended, is mounted in a centrifuge drum 35 closed by a lid 36. A photo-converter 37 is mounted in the lid 36 and faces a stroboscopic lamp 38 which is mounted in the base of the drum and emits pulses or flashes of light at a frequency adapted to the speed of the centrifuge head and to the number of test-tube carriers. The photo-converter has two groups of photo-cells. One group 39 responds to bright-dark reflection and is disposed over the trajictory of the closed ends of the testtubes where sediment tends to accumulate. The other group 40 responds to dark-bright reflection and is disposed over the parts of the test-tubes where clear liquid is likely to occur. The responses of the two groups are combined by logic circuitry and switches to give a single control signal which is arranged to trigger the halting of the centrifuge when the sediment and clear liquid have separated out in the test-tubes.
