Abstract

1,243,305. Diorgano zinc compounds. INTERNATIONAL LEAD ZINC RESEARCH ORGANIZATION Inc. 28 May, 1969 [21 Jan., 1969], No. 26884/69. Heading C2J. [Also in Division C7] Diorgano zinc compounds, in which the organo groups are C 1 -C 8 alkyl, alkenyl in which the double bond is more than two carbon atoms removed from the. zinc atom or alkynyl having internal carbon-carbon-triple bonds, are produced by (i) mixing an organo bromide with an alloy of zinc with at least one alkali metal selected from sodium, potassium and/or lithium in proportions of 1 to 3 wt. per cent sodium, 0.5 to 5À0 wt. per cent potassium and 1 to 10 wt. per cent lithium, the remainder being zinc, in a moisture-free atmosphere, the molar ratio of zinc to organo bromide being at least 1:1; and (ii) refluxing at 40‹ C. to 180‹ C. until the refluxing ceases. If the organo bromide is methyl or ethyl bromide the reflux should be carried out at a pressure greater than atmospheric. The product is recovered by distillation at reduced pressure in the absence of moisture. Mercury may be present in the zinc alloy. The diorgano zinc compounds specified are di-npropyl zinc, di - iso - propyl zinc, di - iso - butyl zinc, di - n - butyl zinc; di - n - amyl zinc, di-iso-amyl zinc, and di - n - buten - 3 - yl zinc.
