Abstract

1,243,200. Drying dielectric materials. J. W, MANN, and G. F. RUSSELL. 9 Aug., 1968, No. 38077/68. Heading F4G. [Also in Division H5] A process of substantially equalizing unevenly distributed residual moisture in a dielectric material which has been subjected to a primary drying step comprises subjecting the material to the heating effect of a high frequency alternating current field of force, the temperature of the ambient air being maintained between 212‹ and 325‹ F. In the process evaporated moisture is prevented from recondensing on the material. The dielectric material may be a web, wood veneer, paper, paperboard, cloth or fibrous pipe. In the apparatus shown the sheet 1 is carried continuously or intermittently by rollers 12 through an electric field produced by pairs of electrodes 2, 3 connected to a radio frequency generator, in a housing, the temperature of the air being maintained above 212‹ F. by heaters 9 (e.g. steam pipes, electric heaters, infra-red heaters). The electrodes 2 and 3 are respectively positively and negatively charged. The sheet may be raised by fingers 13 against the electrodes 2, 3. The operations of opening and closing the inlet and outlet doors 8, raising and lowering the fingers 13 and producing the electric field are synchronized.
