Abstract

1,243,137. Recording and playback. LANIER ELECTRONIC LABORATORY Inc. 8 July, 1969, No. 34316/69. Heading G5R. In an arrangement for indicating the net transfer of an endless tape in a first direction past a reference position in a tape recording playback system, an indicator is operable during a record operation while tape is moved in the first direction and a control system is operable to prevent operation of the indicator when the particular tape section being driven past the reference position in the first direction has previously been driven past the position in the other direction. This prevents movement of the same section of tape from being recorded twice. The record/playback circuit may be such that record and listen facilities are separately controlled by appropriate operation of a switch 24 in circuit with drive arrangements 12 for moving the tape in the first direction. The indicator, which is a timer A, is connected in circuit with the record facilities only. A second arrangement 15 may also be brought into circuit by the switch 24 to enable the tape to be rewound prior to a listen operation. Obviously for correct indication, material must not be recorded over existing recordings. In an alternative arrangement which automatically prevents the indicator operating during the passage of previously recorded tape, both transcribe and listen facilities may be brought into circuit with the forward drive 17 by the switch 25. If the tape is reverse wound by changing the position of switch 25 to actuate the reverse drive circuits 20, a relay winding L2 is energized to switch on an oscillator 26 to provide a tone which is recorded by head 27 on the reverse travelling tape. If this tone is detected as the tape travels forward, the signal from the head energizes a relay L1 via amplifier 28 to open a switch C1 in the timer circuit B, so that this does not operate. Only when recording on previously unrecorded tape will the switch be closed and the timer be operational. Both embodiments may be provided together in a system for simultaneously recording and transcribing endless tape with intermittent recording/transcribing review, on which the recording and transcribing facilities are provided at spaced locations between which the tape passes via temporary storage bins. Timer A may be associated with the recording station and timer B with the transcribing station. The difference in reading between the two will give an indication of the surplus tape in the bins.
