The invention comprises dyestuffs of the general formula. wherein, R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> are H or an optionally substituted hydrocarbon or heterocyclic radical, or R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> may form with the carbon atom a 5- or 6-membered ring which may be heterocyclic and rings A and B, may be further substituted. Preferably the dyestuffs are free from acid water-solubilizing groups and are substituted para to the -NH- of the heterocyclic ring. They, are prepared by reacting, a 1-amino-2-methylol with an aldehyde or ketone R<SP>1</SP>(R<SP>2</SP>)C=O and when R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP>, are,bdth H by reacting an optionally substituted l-aminoanthraquinone-2-sulphoniÞ acid with at least 2 'molecular , proportions of formaldehyde 'in presence of a reducing agent. and, an alkaline agent .and acidifying the 2-methylol compound formed to effect formation of the heterocyclic ring. 'The dyestuffs give greenish blue and red shades, on wool, silk, synthetic polyamides, polyacrylonitrile polyesters and cellulose acetates.
