Abstract

1,242,650. Thiocyanogen. AMERICAN CYANAMID CO. 18 March, 1969 [15 May, 1968 (2)], No. 14222/69. Heading C1A. [Also in Divisions A5 and C2] A solution of thiocyanogen (NCS.SCN) in an organic solvent is produced by the reaction of chlorine or bromine with a water-soluble thiocyanate, particularly an ammonium, alkali metal, or alkaline earth metal thiocyanate in aqueous solution to which is added a waterimmiscible organic solvent, preferably a mononuclear aromatic hydrocarbon, particularly toluene. The aqueous phase is separated and the organic phase containing thiocyanogen treated with nitrogen to remove excess halogen.
