Abstract

1,242,626. Refrigerating systems; tubular heat exchange elements. UNION CARBIDE CORP. 20 Nov., 1969 [21 Nov., 1968], No. 56801/69. Headings F4H and F4S. In an apparatus in which a freeze-sensitive product 12 stored in a chamber 11 is sprayed from an overhead conduit 22 with refrigerant, e.g. liquid air, argon, carbon dioxide, helium or nitrogen stored in a container 13, the refrigerant flow from the conduit is controlled so as to maintain the chamber temperature between 33‹ and 50‹ F., and some of the stored liquid is directed through an evaporating heat exchanger 16 located beneath the product so as to provide a more uniform temperature throughout the chamber 11. The heat exchanger 16 comprises conduits 16a, 16b embedded in thermal insulation 17, Fig. 3, effective to provide heat conductance of 5-30 BTUs per hour per foot of conduit length to floor means 38 of the chamber 11. The vaporized and superheated refrigerant from the heat exchanger 16 may be passed to the spray head upstream of openings 23 therein, or it may be discharged through conduit 20 into the chamber 11. As shown, the discharge end of conduit 20 comprises an expander 30 driving a fan 32 for circulating the environment gas. The conduit 20 may incorporate a further heat exchanger or superheater (not indicated) located outside the chamber 11. Some of the recirculated gas may be discharged through a vent 20a to atmosphere whilst the remainder, as shown by the arrows in Fig. 2, circulates through a path including passes 16c, Fig. 3, in the heat exchanger 16. The product support floor 19 consisting, eg of metal sheet or plywood members 38, overlies the heat exchanger 16. Clips 36 with arms 37 may conduct some of the heat to the heat exchanger tubes 16a, 16b of the heat exchanger 16; or these elements 36, 37 may merely comprise supports for the tubes in which case they may be of prastics material whilst washer-like elements on the tubes may conduct heat thereto.
