Abstract

1,242,603. Wave couplings. NIPPON KOKAN K.K. 19 Nov., 1968 [25 Dec., 1967; 25 March, 1968], No. 54747/68. Heading H4J. In apparatus for shifting the propagation of vibratory energy through 90 degrees two transmission elements are connected at right angles at a node, an end boundary of one transmission element is at an antinode and carries a longitudinally vibrating transducer while an end boundary of the other transmission element is at an antinode and discharges longitudinally vibratory energy. A cross-shaped member (Fig. 10) may be regarded as two transmission elements joined at their centres. Each element is one half wavelength long at the frequency to be employed. When driving face A<SP>1</SP> is fitted with a vibratory transducer the amplitudes at A, A<SP>1</SP>, B. B<SP>1</SP> are equal. There may be a third transmission element perpendicular to the other two (Fig. 4) so that energy from an input transducer 1 is transmitted in four different directions parallel to its original direction to be discharged at end faces 13, 14, 15, 16. The reverse is achieved by fixing four transducers (1) Fig. 9 (not shown) to the end faces 13, 14, 15, 16, vibrating them together and discharging the vibratory energy at one of the other end faces. The other free end face is fitted with a reflection plate (22) for the frequency concerned. In another arrangement (Fig. 5), three flanges 18, 19, 20 are spaced one half wavelength apart on a transmission rod 17. The distance between each end face of rod 17 and the neighbouring flange 18 or 20 is one quarter wavelength. The energy from the transducer 1 is derived at the peripheries of the three flanges 18, 19, 20. A flange can be used. for convergence instead of divergence. If a flange 24 (Fig. 8) has a regular polygonal periphery, vibratory transducers 1 may be fitted to flat faces and discharged from one end face of the transmission element 23. The other end face is fitted with a reflector plate 22 or replaced by one more transducer. Alternatively, the vibratory energy may be discharged at the rim of a flange 25 positioned one half wavelength from the flange 24. In another embodiment a rod 33 (Fig. 14) has two supports 32, 40 at nodes and two polygonal flanges 30, 31 at antinodes. Twelve transducers (1) Fig. 15 (not shown) are fixed to each flange 30, 31 at holes 34, 35 &c. The structure of Fig. 14 may be increased by, for example, six stages. The transmission elements may be rods or tubes and the transducer(s) may be of magnetostrictive, electrostrictive or piezoelectric type.
