Abstract

1,242,550. Apparatus for stimulating muscles. BIO-CONTROLS CORP. 25 Oct., 1968 [13 Aug., 1968], No. 50760/68. Heading A5R. Apparatus for use in controlling anal and urinary incontinence by electrical stimulation of the sphincter rectalis comprises a rectal probe 8 including a suppository body 10, formed of an insulating material such as silicone rubber, said body having a pair of spaced electrical contacts 20, 22 secured to the external surface of its neck 14 to rest against the sphincter rectalis after insertion. The electric contacts are of an electrically conductive material such as gold or stainless steel and may be in continuous thin leaf form or formed by a plurality of side-by-side wires (23), Fig. 1, (not shown), and are preferably glued to the surface of the probe. An electrical generator, Fig. 3 (not shown), for energizing the electrodes comprises a time base oscilator (56) producing a series of timing pulses, and a bistable circuit (72) arranged to switch between alternate states in response to successive timing pulses, and to apply a substantially square wave output across said leads 28, 30. The average potential of the output is zero. The generator may be powered by a battery, and may supply a peak potential of between 1 and 2 volts, at a frequency from 18 to 90 Herz.
