Abstract
1,242,433. Ultraviolet sterilizing apparatus. A. LANDRY. 13 Nov., 1968 [13 May, 1968], No. 53858/68. Heading H5R. A sterilizer for fluid media particularly water comprises a casing, a fluid conducting pipe, which is constructed of a material to which impurities e.g. colloidal matter contained in the fluid do not stick thereby prohibiting film build up on the inner surface of the pipe, said pipe having multiple convolutions with adjacent substantially unidirectional elongated portions in substantially parallel relation and a plurality of germicidal lamps mounted in the casing adjacent and parallel to said elongated pipe portions so as to irradiate each pipe portion from at least two directions at least the elongated portions of the pipe and preferably the whole of it being transparent to the germicidal e.g. ultraviolet radiation emitted by the lamps. As shown in Figs. 1 and 3 a casing 10 contains a fluorinated polyethylene pipe 22 which has straight portions 24 and bends 26. The pipe is attached to the top and bottom of the casing 10 by clips 28 and to inlet/outlet 18/20 on the top 16 of the casing. Side 12 of the casing removably fastened to the remainder of the casing by screws 14 supports U/V lamps 30 on bracket 32 such that they are positioned between adjacent pairs of portions 24. This ensures that both sides of the tube are irradiated, and preferably the diameters of the pipe and lamps are selected so that the full cross-section of water in the pipe is effectively penetrated by the U/V radiation. Screened lenses 34 enables the operation of the lamps to be visually monitored. The inner surfaces of the casing may be polished so as to reflect radiation.
