Abstract
1,242,395. Releasable fastenings; boring earth etc. CEMENTATION CO., Ltd 19 Aug., 1968 [4 Sept., 1967], No. 40271/67. Headings E1F and E2A. A clamping device comprises a ring-like structure carrying, in a plurality of openings at respective spaced apart positions therearound, respective load transmitting members 9 each of which is arranged for sliding movement in one of said openings in opposite directions i.e. towards and away from the structure axis, the member being substantially immovable relative to structure in all other directions, the load transmitting members backing onto flexible means contained within the structure and to which pressure fluid can be supplied to distend the flexible means and thereby cause sliding movement of each load transmitting member in one of said opposite directions whereby in use each load transmitting member can be brought into clamping engagement with a driven member 5a. In the construction shown where the device forms part of a vibrating machine for driving the driven member into the ground or for extracting it from the ground, the ring like structure consists of an annular member 1, a second annular member 2 of greater diameter and plates 4 and 5 which with the members 1 and 2 define an annular cavity 3 in which the flexible member is contained. The openings for the load transmitting members 9 are in the member 1, the driven member 5a being inside the member 1. The flexible means consists of an inner tube 6 and an outer protective cover 7, fluid being supplied to the inner tube via a connection 8. The members 9 include plates 12 which are arranged to present a substantially continuous surface to the outer cover 7 of the flexible member. Instead of the ring-like structure being annular as shown it can have a non- annular configuration. Instead of there being a common cover 7 and tubes 6, each load transmitting member can have its own cover and tube, alternatively there can be a plurality of annular covers and tubes therefore either concentrically or coaxially arranged.
