Abstract

In a digital transmission system employing transparent transmission and comprising a programmed exchange, and in which duration significant signals, such as calling signals, are transmitted in a code form which is not duration significant, the coded control signals are transmitted over a channel common to a group of information channels, which is assigned to one or more of these information channels as required for a limited time. Each control signal is accompanied by a signal indicating the information channel to which it is relevant. Allotting the control signal channel to a seized information channel is initiated by a signal sent to the exchange by the subscriber and the channel may remain allotted until the information channel is released. The control channel may be common to one or more groups of channels or there may be several control channels to each group. A counter at the exchange determines the number of transparent information channels in use in a group of channels, and an engaged signal is sent to any subscriber requesting a transparent channel when a preset number is exceeded.
