Abstract

1,242,255. Separating components of gas mixtures; mixing apparatus. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. 15 Oct., 1968 [18 Oct., 1967], No. 48886/ 68. Headings B1C and B1L. Separated radioactive fractions eluted in carrier gas from a gas chromatograph or from a detecting adjunct thereto are passed to inlet 12 of tube 1, within which shaft 2 carrying helicoil blades 10 rotates at high speed e.g. 2,000 r.p.m. Absorbent liquid enters through inlet 8 and is atomised by notch 20 in blade 10, liquid being thereby caused to flow uniformly down the walls of tube 1 at a rate greater than or equal to that of the flow of gas in the same direction, whereby the radioactive gas fraction is absorbed in the liquid. The liquid is either collected in gutter 9 and removed through outlet 11, or gutter 9 is removed and the liquid run off through outlet 14; gas leaves through outlet 13. Thus, <SP>14</SP>C-labelled compounds which have been separated chromatographically and oxidised to <SP>14</SP>CO 2 in a flame ionisation detector may be collected in liquid fractions in the apparatus shown for the determination of radioactivity, using NaOH solution as absorbent.
