Abstract
1,242,201. Surgical needles, blades &c. DOW CORNING CORP. 2 Jan., 1970 [12 Feb., 1969; 24 April, 1969], No. 217/70. Heading A5R. [Also in Divisions B1 and B2] The fine cutting edge of an article such as a razor blade, hypodermic needle, pair of scissors, scalpel or curette, has a coating consisting essentially of at least partially cured organosiloxane copolymer consisting of (1) a 5-20% polymer units of the formula where R is a lower alkyl radical of not more than 6 carbon atoms, Y is either an -OH or -OR' radical, in which R is an alkyl radical of no more than 3 carbon atoms, q is hydrogen, -CH 3 or -CH 2 , CH 2 , NH 2 , a is 0 or 1 and b is 0 or 1, the sum of a and b being 0 to 2, and (2) 80-95% of polymer units of the formula where R" is -OH or -CH 3 , and c is 1 or 2. The article may be a razor blade or high carbon steel or stainless steel. Suitable (polyaminoalkyl) alkoxysilanes are listed. The blade may be cleaned with methyl chloroform vapour and with alcoholic potassium hydroxide solution before spraying with a solution of the copolymer.
