Abstract

1,242,165. Conditioning plastics prior to electroplating. PHILLIPS PETROLEUM CO. 17 March, 1969 [18 March, 1968], No. 13878/69. Heading C3P. [Also in Division C7] Plastic material is conditioned prior to electroplating by incorporation of 1-60% by weight, based on the weight of the filled composition, of a siliceous filler, shaping the filled plastics composition, etching the surface of the shaped compositions with an acidic aqueous chromate solution and treating the surface, before or after etching, with hydrogen fluoride. Plastics materials used include polyethylene, polypropylene, and copolymers of ethylene with propylene or 1-hexene. The resultant plastic articles may be preplated by electrolessly depositing a metal thereon e.g. Cu and Ni, and then electroplated with Cu, Ni or Cr by conventional methods (see Division C7).
