Abstract

1,242,147. Separating iron from solution. UNION CARBIDE CANADA Ltd. 28 Feb., 1969 [3 April, 1968], No. 10696/69. Heading C1A. Iron is removed from an aqueous solution containing both Fe<SP>2+</SP> and particles of MnO 2 by adjusting the pH to between 2 and the pH at which Fe<SP>2+</SP>, Zn<SP>2+</SP> and Cd<SP>2+</SP> ions form hydroxides, the Fe<SP>2+</SP> being adsorbed by the MnO 2 and oxidized by the MnO 2 to Fe 2 O 3 which is then separated from solution as Fe 2 O 3 .MnO 2 . Preferably the MnO 2 in added after the adjustment of pH. Any iron in solution which is not as Fe<SP>2+</SP> may first be reduced to Fe<SP>2+</SP> by, for example, ZnS. The MnO 2 has a mesh size (Tyler) preferably between 50 and 300 and the temperature is preferably between 20‹ C. and the boiling point of the solution. The solution may be that derived from leaching ores also containing zinc, and/or cadmium. The Fe 2 O 3 .- MnO 2 may be subsequently treated with mineral acid (e.g. H 2 SO 4 ) to dissolve the iron, as Fe<SP>3+</SP>, the MnO 2 being recovered and re-used or the Fe 2 O 3 .MnO 2 may be treated with further Fe<SP>2+</SP> solution until all the manganese is in solution at Mn<SP>2+</SP>.
