Abstract

1,242,071. Reciprocating pump. R. W. WINTER. March 24, 1969 [April 23, 1968], No.19105/68. Heading F1A. A fluid pump for, e.g., acids comprises a reciprocable piston 32 slidable within an aluminium cylinder 10 driven by a connecting rod 34 pivotally and eccentrically mounted on a transverse driveshaft 38, the working chamber 16 having a P.T.F.E. lining 18, and a fluid inlet and a fluid outlet, each having a non-return valve, the piston having a part spherical peripheral surface with an annular groove 40 around the region of maximum diameter in which is seated an O-ring seal 41. In order to vary the stroke of the piston 32 with the pressure of fluid in the chamber 16, the connecting rod 34 is formed of a rod 42 fixed to the piston at one end and telescopically slidable with a sleeve 46 of a sleeve member 44, the inner end of the sleeve 46 opening into an enlarged cavity 48 wherein a nut 50 secured to the end of the rod 42 is slidable. A spring 54 bears upon the piston 32 and sleeve member 44 to urge the piston rod to its maximum extension. The pump has legs 60 having internal threads for attachment to a horizontal surface, and an internal wall 62 in the cylinder 10 prevents any fluid escaping past the piston 32 passing down the cylinder, a drain hole 64 being provided. The connecting rod 34 may be lubricated via an oil port 66, the sleeve member 44 being provided with a trough 68 and distributing passages 70. Air vessels (72) Fig.2 (not shown) provided in the inlet and outlet conduits smooth the pressure pulses in the fluid due to the reciprocating piston. The operating pressure of the pump may be varied by changing the spring 54, or by inserting spacer pieces at one end of the spring.
