Abstract
1,241,748. Centrifugal separators. COMPAGNIE FRANCAISE DES PETROLES S.A. 6 Oct., 1968 [14 Nov., 1968], No. 48994/ 69. Heading B2P. A centrifugal separator for separating gas from crude oil comprises a number of cylindrical sections, e.g. 17, 18, 19, with inclined ends joined in annular fashion to define a substantially curved path for the crude oil, the separator having an inlet 13 for the crude oil at one end of the path and outlets 21, 24 for oil and gas respectively at the other end of the path. As shown, the separator is formed of seven cylinder sections whose projection in plan, Fig. 1, forms seven elements of an octagonal ring, the eighth elements 27 of which contains inlet and outlet ducts for the separator. Crude oil from an underwater wellhead 1 passes via ducts 3, 4 to a fluid monitoring assembly (not shown) containing monitoring instruments for regulating the rate of flow of crude oil, gas and degassed oil and connected to the separator by means of a rotatable member 5 and a fixed member 11, Fig. 2. From the monitoring assembly the crude oil flows along ducts 8, 12, 13, to the separator where, due to the effect of centrifugal force, separation of the gas and oil is effected. The gas is collected in the upper portion of the separator and passes through ducts 21, 7 to the monitoring assembly and thence through ducts 10, 23 to a flare. The degassed oil is collected in the lower portion of the separator and passes through ducts 24, 9 to the monitoring assembly from which it flows along ducts 6, 25 to appropriate pipes. Manholes are provided at 26 and 28. The separator is supported around the well-head 1 on a first set of arms 29-33 rigidly attached to the base of the well-head and is connected to the upper portion of the well-head by a second set of arms 38-41 hinged to fixing means 42-45 on the separator and detachably connected to a collar 46, 47 clamped on the well-head. In modifications, tubes 48 forming the floor of the separator may be omitted and the instruments in the monitoring assembly may be installed in the separator so that the duct 2 may then be connected to the duct 13, the duct 24 to the duct 25 and the duct 21 to the duct 23, and valves may be installed in these ducts.
