Abstract
1,241,501. Photo-electric distance measuring. PAILLARD S.A. 12 Sept., 1969 [24 Sept., 1968], No. 45038/69. Heading H4D. In a range finder generally of the kind described in Specification 1,180,778 the frequency of modulation of the projected light beam from lamp 1 is arranged to increase as range decreases. The object of the invention is to afford a rapid response for small ranges so as to correctly focus a cine camera whilst avoiding hunting when the range is large. In the embodiment photo-conductors 9, 10 (see also Fig. 1, not shown) give rise to an A.C. signal of amplitude corresponding to the departure of the photoconductor assembly from a balance position and of phase, relative to the modulation of the transmitted beam, dependent on the sense of such departure. In one embodiment the modulation is at 20 c/s. for ranges between 5 and 20 metres and at 80 c/s. for ranges below 5 metres (20 metres corresponds in practice to focusing at infinity). The change-over of frequency is effected by a switch (25, Fig. 1, not shown) actuated by a projection on the support of the photo-conductor assembly. In another embodiment the modulation of transmitting lamp 1 is effected by a multivibrator MX the frequency of which depends on the voltage at the collector of transistor T3. When the added outputs from cells 9, 10 is large (corresponding to a nearby target) transistor T2 is rendered more conductive, the voltage drop across resistor R9 is small and the multivibrator gives maximum frequency; and vice-versa. Lamp 1 is an incandescent one which is advantageous in that the modulation depth of the light beam is larger for low modulation frequencies.
