Abstract

1,241,306. Moulding cellular articles. COMPAGNIE DE SAINT-GOBAIN. 28 Oct., 1968 [6 Dec., 1967; 15 Jan., 1968], No. 51071/68. Heading B5A. A method of obtaining moulded articles from beads of a thermoplastics material containing a blowing agent, comprises the steps of preheating the beads to soften them, introducing the preheated beads into a mould and heating the beads in the mould with superheated steam. Beads 1 are fed by gravity from a hopper 2, Fig. 1, on to a belt 3 above which is located a band conveyer 4. Hot air is introduced into one of a set of boxes 6, 7 and the opposite one of which is connected to vacuum. Superheated steam is supplied by jets 8 in box 9 below which is a box 10 connected to vacuum. The moulded slab then passes between conveyers 16, 17 which may be closer together than the conveyers 3, 4 and the slab is cooled by cold air circulating between boxes 11, 12. In another example, Fig. 6 (not shown), the hopper has two compartments containing beads of different size or density so that a layered product as shown in Fig. 7, is produced, the beads in the outer layers 65a and 65c having a higher density than those of central layer 65b. The formed sheet may be undulated by passing it between slatted conveyers. The slats may be shaped to provide egg or fruit receiving cavities in the sheet. The sheet may be transversely or longitudinally corrugated by passing it between opposed rollers or belts after heating, e.g. by infra-red lamps, if necessary. In an example, Fig. 2, for making discrete articles, beads 22 are fed by hot air from a hopper 23 into a perforated mould 18. Steam is supplied via pipes 24 to the mould jacket 19 and superheated steam is supplied to the mould cavity via pipes 26 after replacing the hopper with a cover and, if desired, the diffuser 20 with a base. The hopper may be connected to the mould by a pipe through which the beads are supplied to the mould by a hot air stream.
