Abstract

[Also in Division C3] A plastics substrate is provided with a hard, heat and acetone resistant organopolysiloxane coating by reacting a silane, which is methyltrialkoxysilane e.g. CH 3 Si(OC 2 H 5 ) 3 or a mixture thereof with phenyltrialkoxysilane e.g. CHH 5 Si(OC 2 H 5 ) 3 in which the alkoxy group contains less than 5 C atoms, with water at 50-80‹C for 1-10 hours, heating to 80- 300‹C to remove alkanol and water and then precuring at 90-140‹C to form a precured, further curable polysiloxane which is then dissolved in an organic solvent. The solution, which preferably contains 5-85 wt % polysiloxane is applied to the substrate e.g. by spraying, brushing, rollers or dipping. The solvent is evaporated and the coating is cured by heating at 90-140‹C for 4-168 hours. The coating compositions may contain UV absorbers e.g. 2-hydroxy-4 methoxy benzophenone, which is preferably present in an amount of 1-5% wt, as well as fillers, pigments, antioxidants, stabilisers, antistatic and antifoaming agents. Up to 10 mole % of diphenylsilanediol may be present with the silane and when a silane mixture is employed the molar ratio may vary between 10:1 and 1:10. A wide variety of suitable substrates and organic solvents are specified.
