Abstract

1,240,651. Toothed gears. PAINTON & CO. Ltd. 29 Aug., 1968 [5 Sept., 1967], No. 40426/67. Heading F2Q. Reduction gearing comprises a stationary gear 3 having facial bevel teeth 8 and a flexible driven gear 18 having teeth 19 differing in number from the teeth 8 and successively urged into tight mesh with the teeth 8 by a spring-pressed ball 31 mounted in a driving cap 24. Each gear is recessed between the root portions of adjacent teeth to accommodate the tip of a tooth of the other gear, alternatively the tips of the teeth could be rounded to provide the desired clearance. This permits tight meshing of the teeth substantially eliminating back-lash. The flexible gear 18 is integral with an output shaft 17, 13 and is moulded from nylon. The teeth 19 are individually formed with tabs 20 engaging flutes in a freely mounted dial ring 21, the flutes enabling the teeth 19 to be flexed into mesh with the stationary teeth whilst remaining engaged in the flutes. Index markings are provided around the lower portion of the cap 24 and around the dial ring 21, and a reference mark is provided on the gear 3, the position of the output shaft being indicated by movement of the indicia of the ring 21 past the reference mark. The gearing may be incorporated in the turret control head of a potentiometer.
