In apparatus for feeding plates, e.g. accumulator plates on to a stack, four magazines are placed at 90 degree intervals round a stacking table 11, Fig. 2, and the plates are fed from the bottoms of the magazines, one from each in turn, by pusher plates actuated by pneumatic rams 28 until the stack is complete, when the table is lowered by a ram 12 to deposite the stack on conveyer belts, which are then moved by a ram 14 to move the stack clear of the table. As described, the plates stacked are a negative plate, a spacer, a positive plate and a spacer, the cycle being repeated as often as required, and a final negative plate forms the top of the stack, the spacer having projections extending alternately downwards and upwards. The plates pass on to the stack over guide rods 29 supported on horizontally adjustable supports 30 forming side guides for the stack. The rams 28, 12, 14 are operated by six valves actuated by cams on a shaft 47, Fig. 5. A valve selector bar is provided which in one position allows only the four valves for the rams 28 to be operated in repeated succession, and in a second position allows only the valves for the rams 12, 14 to be operated. An indexing cam 65 on the shaft 47 oscillates, twice in every rotation, by means of recesses 66 engaging a roller 64, a pawl mechanism comprising a lever 62 carrying a pawl 67, which engages notches 61 in an index wheel. Adjustably secured to the wheel by a screw 76 is a timing cam 75 having a raised portion 77 which, when the stack is the desired height with a negative plate on top, actuates a microswitch 78 to reverse the position of the selector bar and lower the table 11. An abutment 81 on the cam 75 engages a lobe 80 on the pawl to raise it clear of the notches, a bar 84 on the pawl actuating a microswitch 85 for a solenoid 71 to release a retaining pawl 70, whereupon a spring 68 returns the wheel to its starting position, where an abutment 86 on the wheel engages the lobe 80 to return the pawls to operative position.
