1,239,938. Furan alcohols. NOVOCHERKASSKY POLITEKHNICHESKY INSTITUT AND KRASNODARSKY POLITEKHNICHESKY INSTITUT. 26 Nov., 1968, No. 55976/68. Heading C2C. Alcohols of the furan series are prepared by contacting an aqueous or aqueous-alcoholic solution of an aldehyde of the furan series with an alkali metal amalgam having a concentration of 0À1 to 3À0 N with respect to the alkali metal, at a rate effecting decomposition of the amalgam at 800 to 3000 A/m.<SP>2</SP>, whilst passing C0 2 through the solution to neutralize the alkali formed as a result of said decomposition. The aldehyde solution is preferably acidified before contacting the amalgam. Examples prepare furfuryl alcohol, 2,5 - di(hydroxymethyl)furan, 5 - methylfurfuryl alcohol, 5- bromofurfuryl alcohol and 5 - chloro - furfuryl alcohol.
