Abstract
1,239,918. Magnetic recording. J. LAUDER. 25 July, 1968 [25 July, 1967], No. 34089/67. Heading G5R. A magnetic recording medium, e.g. tape or disc, is driven through a gap between two polepieces of a recording and/or playback head which polepieces are relatively movable so as to produce a minimum air gap which moves transversely of the direction of travel of the record and in a direction different to the relative velocity of the polepieces. A video tape having transverse tracks may thus be transduced and edited. In Fig. 1 a motor 2 drives a rotor 1 having oblique, inset magnetic polepieces 5, Fig. 4, and co-operating with a single, axial polepiece forming part of a magnetic core structure 3 having a record/playback winding 4 and a monitoring winding 9 on the same core or on a separate structure 8. For editing, a magnetic clutch 12 is energized to couple a trunnion 10 supporting the core structure to the motor and thereby drive the structure in a direction opposite to the tape (which may however be stationary) until it abuts a stop which may incorporate a switch to de-energize the clutch, a spring 11 returning the structure to its normal position. In a modification three sets of polepieces are provided in the rotor periphery to define three tracks, handling different frequency ranges, and in others the magnetic inserts 5 are positioned at the edge of the circular face of the rotor, or on the periphery of a rotor of truncated conical shape and may be radial, oblique or helical and have concave operative surfaces, whilst the record path may be other than tangential to the rotor. Insert construction.-The tip of a polepiece in section across a groove containing it is shown in Fig. 19 in which 20 is a copper or brass casing, 21 is magnetic foil, 22 a protective plastics or other layer, 23 is ferrite, 24 is a copper or other covering, and 25 a filler material. The inserts are retained in the rotor against centrifugal force by ferrite and non-magnetic rings with screening material in between and on each side of the stationary pole tips.
