Abstract
1,239,384. A/D converters. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. 9 Sept., 1968 [9 June, 1967], No. 26771/67. Heading G4H. An analogue to digital converter comprises series connected stages, each stage comparing its analogue input V in with a reference signal V ref to derive a monophylic or straight binary coded output bit in accordance with whether V in is greater or less than V ref and transmitting an analogue signal (2V in - V ref ) (for the monophylic code) or V in - V ref if V in > V ref (for the straight binary code) to the input terminal of the next stage. Each stage comprises an amplifier 2 (Fig. 4) with a feedback circuit including a bridge 6, 7, 8, 9 the input to the next stage being taken across a resistance R 1 in one diagonal of the bridge, the digital output signal 16 being taken from the output of the amplifier 2. The resistance R 1 may be connected to the input of a differential amplifier 18 connected to the next stage or the amplifier 2 may be a differential amplifier. In the embodiment of Fig. 4 the reference voltage is subtracted from the analogue voltage at a junction 15 the output bits from the stages being in reflected binary code. For all stages except the first the reference voltage equals ¢V max , the first stage comparing the input voltage with zero to derive a polarity bit. In the embodiment of Fig. 7 (not shown) the reference signal is only subtracted before the signal is fed to the next stage if the digital output of the stage is " 1 ".
