Abstract
1,239,014. Moulding sheaths on cables. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. 2 Oct., 1968 [2 Jan., 1968], No. 45994/67. Heading B5A. [Also in Division H2] A method of sealing a joint between thermoplastic sheathed cables 1, 2 involves the steps of (a) moulding thermoplastic collars 9 on to the sheaths; (b) placing a tightly fitting thermoplastic sleeve 5 on collars 9; and (c) sealing sleeve 5 and collars 9 together by moulding thermoplastic annuli at 11. The various thermoplastics are preferably polyethylene. The moulding processes comprise injecting molten polyethylene at 280‹ C. under 200 lb/inch<SP>2</SP> into moulds 10 for annuli 11 and moulds (4) for collars 9 (Fig. 1, not shown) until the polyethylene sets, to avoid the formation of voids. Moulds 10, (4), of epoxide resin putty, may be sectional and removable or in one piece and designed for destruction.
