Abstract
1,238,926. Magnetic tape storage. AMPEX CORP. 5 Dec., 1968 [7 Dec., 1967], No. 57884/68. Headings G4C and G5R. To reduce the effect of "dropouts", information is recorded and read-out redundantly in spaced oblique tracks by a plurality of rotatable magnetic transducers. As described, the information, which may be digital, video, radar or telemetry data, is recorded in transverse tracks on a magnetic tape by a rotary head assembly carrying four pairs of axially and circumferentially spaced record/playback heads such as 7A<SP>1</SP>, 7A<SP>11</SP>. During recording of F.M. signals (Fig. 6, not shown) the modulated information is combined with a reference frequency (65) in a pilot adder (63) and fed to one or two record amplifiers (66, 67) connected via rotary transformers (68, 69) to two diametrically opposed head pairs. On playback, the head pairs 7A, 7C &c. are switched to playback circuitry comprising amplifiers 71, 79, equalizers 72, 73, and 80, 81, time-base correctors 74, 82 controlled by the reference frequency 75, switcher 76 and demodulator 77, 78. - The information may alternatively be phase, or carrier shift modulated, or recorded by bias recording. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,202,761.
