Abstract

1,238,551. Silicon nitride. LEYLAND GAS TURBINES Ltd. 16 March, 1970 [19 March, 1969], No. 14404/69. Heading C1A. [Also in Divisions C7 and F4] Si 3 N 4 in sheet or shaped form is made by calendering a mixture of powdered Si, a binder, e.g. polymer of vinyl butyral and a plasticizer, e.g. di-butyl phthalate, preheating below nitriding temperature, e.g. 300-400‹ C. and then sintering in nitrogen, e.g. at 1350-1450‹ C. to form Si 3 N 4 . As shown, a powder mixture of 83.9%. Si, 9.2% binder, 7% plasticizer is extruded at 3, calendered at 4, optionally corrugated at 8, prior to preheating and sintering. The matrix of a rotary heat exchanger is made by superimposing a flat sheet of the mixture on a corrugated sheet, and coiling into a spiral at 10. The sheets may be held together by a Si adhesive prior to coiling.
