Abstract

1,238,501. Coating. E.I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. 21 March, 1968 [21 March, 1967], No. 13743/68. Heading B2E. [Also in Divisions B5, C3 and D2] Aromatic linear polyamides, polyimides, polyimidazoles, polythiadiazoles and polyoxadiazoles which are contaminated by halide ion are intimately associated with 0.1 to 15 wt. % of a degradation inhibiter which is a manganese, zinc or bismuth oxide; a manganese, zinc, bismuth or aluminium hydrated oxide, hydroxide or nitrate; a manganese or zinc carbonate or bismuth subcarbonate; or a manganese, zinc, bismuth or aluminium organic acid salt which is pyrolysable to an oxide below 300‹C to reduce thermal degradation when heated in contact with copper or iron. The intimate association may be effected by incorporating the inhibitor in the polymer or by coating it on the polymer or on another part of an article which contacts the polymer. The combination of certain of the inhibitors with polyamides which is the subject of Specification No. 1,238,502 is disclaimed. The polymer may be used to make a paper, in which case the inhibitor may be added to the starch or as varnish for metal bodies which may first be coated with the inhibitor.
