Abstract
1,238,281. Measuring particle size electrically. BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd. Sept.12, 1968 [Sept.12, 1967], No.41542/67. Heading G1N. Apparatus to measure the mass flow-rate of a suspension of particles of pulverized fuel in air being supplied to a burner through a duct, 1, comprises two annular electrode assemblies mounted longitudinally of the duct and spaced apart along a Venturi construction formed by a circularly symmetrical member 6 tapered at each end and mounted co-axially of the duct a potential difference of about 4500 volts being maintained between the electrodes Figs.2 and 3 (not shown), the downstream assembly is maintained at earth potential and a microammeter is connected to the assemblies to measure the current flowing between them. Pressure tapping points 10, 11, 12, are in the duct wall. The pressure drop dp 1 between the points 10 and 12 is proportional to the air-flow, whilst the ratio of the pressure drop dp 2 , between points 10 and 11, to that dp 1 determines the solids loading of the air-stream (i.e. the ratio by weight of fuel to air). The mass flow-rate of particles through the construction is the product of air-flow and solids loading. Each electrode of the upstream assembly lies in the same diametral plane as an electrode of the downstream assembly and each is of aerofoil section (20) Figs.4, 5 (not shown). Each of the electrodes of the upstream assembly has a stainless steel knife-edge strip (21) set into its downstream edge which strip facilitates the initiation of a corona discharge which will charge the particles flowing past the strip. It is stated that the particle size is proportional to the ratio of this current flow to the mass flow-rate. The measured values may be utilized to control the flowrates by means of an air inlet duct control valve 2a and fuel fed control device 4a.
