A manual parking meter comprises a twopart housing 20, 21 closed by doors 22, 23, the upper part 20 containing the meter mechanism mounted on the door 23 and the lower part 21 storing inserted coins. The doors 22, 23 are mounted on a common hinge pin 24 secured in position by a central screw 26a accessible through the lower part only when the door 22 is open. The door 23 is retained on the hinge pin by pins P removable through the upper part only when the door 23 is open whereby the door 23 and attached meter mechanism may be uncoupled from the hinge pin and removed without exposing the stored coins. Coin action.-The meter includes a plastics insertion block E adapted to receive three coin denominations and pass them to the associated coin slots in a carrier D pivoted at 112 on a member 108. The latter is secured to a shaft 31 rotatable by a handle 102 to move a coin in the carrier into engagement with a corresponding cam surface 64, 65 or 66, whereby the carrier pivots about 112 and receives a spring-loaded pawl 205 in a recess in the carrier. The pawl 205 now engages a rack 59 to ensure that the handle 102 is turned to its full extent before being released. In addition, pivotal movement of the carrier brings a drive member 183 into engagement with a toothed member 119 winding the timer mechanism (not shown) and setting the pointer 251. As the member 108 rotates, a pivoted latch 213 drops and engages behind a pin 217 on the carrier to hold the carrier in its pivoted position as the coin moves off the cam surface 64, 65 or 66. Finally, the latch strikes a pin 218 releasing the carrier to eject the coin and return to its initial position. Initial movement of handle 102 rotates a cam 107 pivoting a member 106 to position a blade 126 and obstruct the insertion of further coins. Also, initial movement of the carrier moves its end 194 away from the member 274, Fig. 13, to release flag 42 which is displayed until movement of handle 102 is complete and the handle has returned to its initial position. Toothed member 119 carries a cam 259 co-operating with a pin 296 on member 279 to control the setting of flag 41. Exhibiting coins-A coin discharged from the carrier D is supported on one end 87 of a pivoted toggle member 86 and displayed through a transparent member 74 and aperture 72 in the meter housing. A second toggle member 92 is operated by one end 208 of a push lever 121 when the carrier is rotated to pivot member 86 and discharge a coin to the store. The end 88 of toggle member 86 prevents the entry of a coin into the display area until the member 92 is returned to the position illustrated in Fig. 3 by the end 213 of push lever 121.
