Abstract
1,237,550. Detergent alkylate. UNIVERSAL OIL PRODUCTS CO. 14 Nov., 1968 [15 Nov., 1967], No. 54077/68. Heading C5E. Linear detergent alkylate is produced by a process comprising the steps of (a) catalytically dehydrogenating an n-paraffin feed in the presence of hydrogen, (b) using the resulting monoolefins to alkylate a monocyclic aromatic, particularly benzene though others are mentioned, (c) separating the alkylation zone effluent to produce required product and an unchanged n-paraffin fraction for recycle to (a), and (d) before said recycling, treating at least part of the n-paraffin fraction to remove non-normal hydrocarbons therefrom such that the concentration of n-parafhns in the n-paraffin fraction is at least 90 wt. per cent. Suitable dehydrogenation catalysts comprise alumina, an alkaline component, a platinum group metal component and a component selected from As, Bi, Sb, S, Se, Te and compounds thereof. Hydrogen produced in (a) is separated and recycled. Conventional alkylation catalysts are used in (b), preferably HF. Step (d) may be carried out by molecular sieve absorption in a simulated counter-current operation, and if the feed to (a) contains non- normal hydrocarbons this may also be passed through the same absorption step. The use of step (d) lessens catalyst deactivation in step (a), and aids maintenance of the quality of the alkylate product.
