Abstract
1,237,503. Glass filament manufacture. OWENS-CORNING FIBERGLAS CORP. 1 Aug., 1969, No. 38637/69. Heading C1M. In the production of glass filaments 16 in which glass is flowed through orifices 14 in a container 10 for molten glass and fin shields 28 are disposed between the cones 12 of glass adjacent the orifice 14 to reduce the temperature of the cores 12, at intervals accumulated volatiles built up on the fin shields 28 are removed by chilling the fins 28 to cause them to contract and shed the accumulated volatiles. As shown in Fig. 2, cold liquid or gas 50 from a supply 52 is sprayed from nozzle 51 on to the undersides of the fins 28. Water at room temperature may be used. As shown in Fig. 5, the header bar 29 from which the fins 28 extend is normally cooled by flowing cooling water therethrough from a normal heat removal system 70, the pump 71 of which is powered from an electrical source 63 with a switch 64 and contact 65. A chilled fluid supply 80 can replace the system 70 by switching contact 64 to engage a contact 66 which energizes solenoid coils 61a and 62a to move valves 61, 62 in conduits 27 to connect pump 81 and supply 80 to the header bar 29, the switch 64 being reversed when volatiles are removed. In Fig. 5, the single fins 28 may be replaced by hollow fins closed at one end or a double header bar assembly at each end of hollow fins may be provided. The mounting arrangement for the header bar 29 (Fig. 2) is given in detail.
