Abstract

1,237,360. Producing staple fibres of foamed synthetic polymers. E. I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. 4 July, 1969 [22 July, 1968], No. 33957/69. Heading B5B. [Also in Division C3] Staple fibres of low-density foamed synthetic polymers are produced by continuously extruding a foamable composition through at least one orifice of a spinneret into a moving gaseous sheath to produce at least one continuous, foamed, solid, polymeric filament; continuously flowing the sheath about the filament or filaments generally along the extrusion direction, the velocity of the sheath being increased along the extrusion direction from a velocity less than the linear rate of filament travel in the region of the spinneret to a velocity exceeding the linear rate of filament travel at a position spaced from the spinneret, whereby the filament or plurality of filaments is directed centrally within the sheath and caused to travel parallel to the extrusion direction, the crosssectional area of the sheath at the said spaced position being at least ten times greater than the total cross-sectional area of the filament or plurality of the filaments; cutting the or each filament by impact with at least one blade caused to move in a circular path in a plane which intersects the extrusion path within about 0À5 inch beyond said spaced position, the linear blade velocity at the point of impact cutting being much greater than the rate of filament travel at the point of impact cutting and conveying the cut filament or plurality of filaments away from the blade along the extrusion direction within the continuing stram of gas constituting the sheath. The foamable composition may be a solution of the polymer in an organic liquid at a temperature above the normal boiling point of the liquid and the sheath may consist essentially of the vapour of the organic liquid. The vapour of the liquid may be continuously separated from the cut filaments and recirculated. The filaments may be comprised of polyethylene terephthalate. The liquid may be methylene chloride.
