Abstract
1,237,279. Cooling brakes. GOODYEAR TIRE & RUBBER CO. 6 Aug., 1968 [11 Sept., 1967], No. 37448/68. Heading F2E. In a brake element e.g. a brake disc for a disc brake, the brake element is formed of a metallic housing 16 which is of hollow steel construction having at least one enclosure containing a carbon base filler material 24 having a higher specific heat selected from a group consisting of carbons, boron carbide, silicon carbides, and titanium carbides and mixtures thereof having an average specific heat greater than 0À25 BTU/lb/‹ F. for the overall temperature range 0‹ to 2000‹ F. The material has a density of at least 0À040 lbs per cubic inch and a compressive strength in the strongest direction of at least 3000 lbs per square inch. The steel housing 16 may be formed of two elements 16a and 18a which are riveted together. Alternatively, as shown in Fig. 3 and 4 the housing 32 is formed of a continuous steel plate having a plurality of equally spaced holes therein within which are contained a plurality of hollow buttons 38 filled with a material of higher specific heat 38b.
