Abstract

1,236,742. Photographic type-composing. INTERNATIONAL PHOTON CORP. 10 Oct., 1969 [11 Oct., 1968], No. 48378/68. Heading B6W. Coded information representing characters or functions is passed from an input keyboard, tape recorder or storage 70, Fig. 1, to a countercomparator 76 where its numerical value is compared with the number of pulses from a character matrix 86 so as to illuminate a flash tube by a circuit 84 when the signals correspond. A box 78 identifies function codes and inhibits the activation of circuit 84 when they occur. A matrix drum 92, Fig. 3, carries a plurality of matrix strips 94, Fig. 6, each carrying one or several rows of characters and corresponding timing slits such as 2, 3, 6, 7, 10, 12 together with intervening slits representing machine functions, such as 1, 4, 5, 8, 9, 11. Thus, the numerical value of character S is represented by the number of slits, namely ten, from the end of the strip. Since no flash takes place for a function code, said code requires no blank space on the strip. Light from the flash tube 104 passes through the selected character and is deflected by a prism 142 movable in the direction of the arrow as the composition of a line proceeds to a selected lens 126 on a lens turret and thence to a film 128. A second optical system 120, 124 and film 130 may be used in conjunction with another matrix strip, using a common control circuit on a time-sharing basis.
