In a photographic type-composing machine where the master characters are carried through a projection zone on a continuously rotating matrix disc 2 there is provided a photo-cell 16. effective to generate an electrical pulse as each master character passes through the projection position (as determined by timing slits 6) and a multiple stage counter 32 which counts the pulses and provides a plurality of outputs to bi-stable switches whereby each of the switches is turned on when the counter registers a preselected count associated with that switch and turned off when the counter registers a different preselected count associated with that switch. Each switch is associated with a different cyclically recurring function of the composing machine (e.g. initiation of justification, lens shift, introduction of justifying leader, tabulation control, unit leading, displacement of a prism carriage, and register, tape or memory advance) such that each function is allotted a preselected period of operation synchronized with the rotation of the matrix disc. This arrangement replaces the "timing cams" associated with the matrix disc of a conventional machine. Disc 2 may he divided into four quadrants each quadrant bearing a different type style and having a special timing slit, e.g. 8. Fig. 1, identifying each successive quadrant such that by employing circuits 20 and 22 the counter 32 may be set through one of the gates 36. 38, 40 and 42 to count the timing slots associated with the quadrant hearing the type style in use. Circuit 46 counts the pulses and compares the count with the count required for a selected character and triggers the flash circuit 48.
