Synthetic and/or natural fibre yarn is cleaned and smoothed by apparatus formed by two or more units each comprising a yarn-engaging i.e. rubbing, member which is freely rotatable about its axis and carried by supports to which movement is imparted such that the distance between the axes of rotation of consecutive members is continuously varied between a maximum and a minimum. As shown, yarn continuously withdrawn from a bobbin 12 is uniformly tensioned by roller 14 and passes from feed roller 13 through a guide 15, then effects one turn around each of successive rollers 5a, 5b, 5c, 5d, freely rotatable on pins 4a, 4b, 4c, 4d, which are angularly displaced relative to one another on respective discs 1a, 1b, 1c, 1d, driven into rotation on shafts 2a, 2b, 2c, 2d, through intermeshing gears from a common drive, Fig. 2 (not shown). At each roller 5a-d the incoming and departing yarn runs frictionally engage. Cleaned yarn passes through a guide 16, around a withdrawing roller 17, to take-up roll 18. In modified apparatus (not shown) adjoining discs rotate in the same direction at similar or different constant or variable speeds. The relative movement of the pins, as at 4a-d, may be other than circular and/or may be confined to reciprocation between, possibly variable, reversal points.
