Abstract

1,236,419. Seaming non-metallic sheet material. W. BAHLSEN. 26 July, 1968 [28 July, 1967], No. 35785/68. Heading B5K. Components 1, 2 made of thermoplastic synthetic material are welded by the induction of eddy currents in an annular metal member 3 which is retained on one of the components prior to the joining thereof, the components 1, 2 being so fashioned that upon heating the member 3 molten plastics material flows to form a fluidtight seal, and, after welding, the unwelded portions of the components 1, 2 in the vicinity of the member 3 lie touching one another. The member 3 may be stamped on to at least one of the components. In one embodiment, Fig. 1, a metal ring 3 is situated around a collar 4 of a base 1 or push-in cover for a hollow container 2. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the ring 3 is replaced by a ring of foil (6). Interlocking components 7, 8 may be joined to form a plastics ball by the induction of eddy currents in a wire 9, Fig. 4, or a foil (10), Fig. 5 (not shown). In other embodiments, a wire (13) or a foil (14) is situated in grooves in components (11), (12), Figs. 6 and 7 (both not shown), which are subsequently joined to form a cylinder. Apparatus for joining a base 16 to a bottle 20, Fig. 8, comprises a coil 15 to induce eddy currents in a metal ring 19 which is located on the base 16 to surround a collar 17. Stamps 18, 21 exert pressure on the components 16, 20 simultaneously with or directly after the eddy current heating.
