[Also in Division F2] A washing machine comprises an agitator 12 mounted in a container 14 and connected to a movable housing 55 forming part of an hydraulic motor 45 and including a chamber within which is provided a stationary member 69, fluid being supplied to the chamber so that the housing 55 is moved by the reaction of the fluid against the stationary member. The imperforate spin basket 13 has a hub 26 rotatable in a sleeve bearing in the bottom wall 16 of tub 14. Mounted in bearings 28 in hub 26 and in bearings resting on the lower flange 19 of a support beneath wall 16 is a transmission shaft 25 which with discharge pump 41 is driven by motor 43. Keyed on shaft 25 is the inner of the two pumping elements 59, 60 of hydraulic pump 44 whose housing 54 is secured with that 55 of the hydraulic motor 45 to a plate 53 on which the agitator 12 is secured. Plate 53 is journalled on a sleeve 71 in which is journalled shaft 25 and sleeve 71 is secured to basket 13. During agitation, a solenoid controlled brake 32 holds hub 26 and hence basket 13 and the vane 69 of hydraulic motor 45. Fluid is admitted under the control of valving 46 alternately to two chambers one on either side of vane 69 in housing 55 from pump 44 to cause oscillation of housing 55 and with it the agitator. The fluid may be the washing water or dry-cleaning fluid e.g. perchlorethylene which enters sump 49 through openings 48 in the dome 47 of agitator 12. During spin-drying, the brake 32 is released and drive of shaft 25 will cause rotation of the pump rotors and hydraulic coupling will cause rotation of the motor housing 55 and vane 69 and with it basket 13. The basket will ultimately reach approximately the speed of drive shaft 25.
