1,236,211. Coatings. TEIJIN Ltd. 29 May, 1968 [31 May, 1967; 11 Sept., 1967; 14 Sept., 1967; 21 Nov., 1967; 2 April, 1968], No. 25755/68. Heading B2E. [Also in Division C3] Polyamide benzimidazoles having recurring units of formula: in which: represents a trivalent aromatic residue, Y represents an aromatic radical and A represents an aromatic group having the carbonyl groups bonded to it other than in the ortho or peri configuration may be used as coating materials. In Example 129 terephthaloyl chloride is reacted with 2, 4-diamino-diphenylamine, in the presence of benzoyl chloride as chain terminator and sodium carbonate as acid acceptor to produce a polyamide-imine. This is converted to the polyamide-benzimidazole by heating, dissolved in N-methyl pyrrolidone and applied to steel sheet. The coating is cured by further heating. In Example 130 the polyamide-imine is preferred from terephthaloyl chloride, isophthaloyl chloride, and 2, 4-diamino-diphenylamine in a mixture of methyl ethyl ketone and aqueous sodium carbonate. The polyamide benzimidazole is dissolved in a mixture of N-methyl pyrrolidone and dimethyl acetamide and applied to copper sheet and a glass rod.
