Abstract

1,236,125. Air-cushion conveyers. BATTELLE MEMORIAL INSTITUTE. 2 July, 1969 [3 July, 1968], No. 33392/69. Heading B8A. [Also in Division F2] A device for providing an air cushion on a surface for supporting a load comprises, adjacent each opening 5 in the surface, a chamber 1 provided with a flexible, elastic membrane 6 which permits the flow of air from an inlet 4 to the opening 5 when a load is located over the opening 5. The membrane 6 is anchored at its periphery in an annular groove la and is formed near its periphery with ports 7. The arrangement is such that, in the absence of a load over the opening 5, the speed of the air flow in the space 8 above the membrane is greater than that below the membrane, whereby the membrane is deformed to lie against the concave surface 2a at the top of the chamber 1, thereby closing the ports 7 and the opening 5. The portion of the membrane opposite the opening 5 is provided with a porous portion, Fig. 2 (not shown), to permit a small air leakage to the opening 5 when the ports 7 are closed. When a load comes to lie over the opening 5, the air leakage through the membrane increases the pressure in the opening 5 to that in the chamber 1 beneath the membrane, whereupon the elastic restoring force in the membrane causes it to resume its full-line position, thereby permitting air flow through the ports 7. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 4, the top wall 14 of a chamber 11 is formed with openings 15 and a membrane 16, formed with ports 19 and perforations 20, is mounted within the chamber adjacent the wall 14. As in the previous embodiment, the membrane will substantially close the openings 15 which are not covered by a load 0. In a modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the load is conveyed over the upper surface of the chamber by means of an endless belt supported on the air cushion. As shown in Fig. 6, an air cushion bearing comprises a hollow, cylindrical casing 22 formed with openings 26 and provided with an elastic tubular membrane 27 having ports 19 and perforations 20. A ring 23 is supported by the air cushion provided by the casing for rotary and axial movement.
