Abstract

1,236,101. Air cushion vehicle. BRITISH HOVERCRAFT CORP. Ltd. 16 Feb., 1968 [28 Jan., 1967], No. 7678/68. Heading B7K. A high speed amphibious air cushion vehicle 11 has a stabilizing arrangement consisting of a number of laterally spaced longitudinally extending planing float members 12. The float members form part of the cushion-containing barrier and contain engines and support propellers 13 and operably interconnected rudders 15. The remainder of the lateral cushion air barrier is formed by a flexible skirt assembly 14 comprising an upper inflatable flexible section from which depend flexible segments. The floats 12 carry wheels 17, for travel on land, which may be driven and are raised or lowered by jacks 18. Within the fore part of the craft is a hydro-ski 16 which carries a ground engaging wheel for use on land at low speeds or for parking. In other embodiments the floats can be used to house fuel or the propulsion apparatus of a water propulsion system. They may be either rigid or flexible and may be at least partly retractable or collapsible for operation over land. Any skirting assembly including side walls may be used. The wheels may be raised to be beside the boat or to extend behind it.
