A protective coating is applied to a plastics article, vapour-coated with a metal, e.g. Ag, Sn, Cu, Au, Al or an alloy thereof, such as a motor vehicle light or headlamp, by an electro-phoretic deposition process in which the article is disposed as anode or cathode in a liquid containing the coating material, e.g. an aqueous varnish emulsion or dispersion or suspension of polycondensate or addition polymer. An injection moulded plastic lamp housing may be heat-treated at 75-80‹C. and base varnished prior to vapour-coating.
