In an automatic ticket entry or exit gate capable of examining either an ordinary ticket 50 or a differently sized season ticket 40, a common ticket inlet 11 is provided and pairs of co-operating rollers 110, 122, 123 and a conveyer belt 132 are actuated by a photosensor 91 on insertion of a ticket to convey the ticket 40 or 50 through lateral and upper guides 151, 162, past magnetic heads 171 and common reading heads 181 to an endless conveyer 142. Valid season tickets 40 are arrested by a stop 232 at an outlet slot 12, while valid ordinary tickets 50 proceed to a stop 233 at an outlet slot 13, photosensor 92 or 93 respectively being actuated thereby to reset the ticket conveying and reading mechanism. The information marked on the ticket is passed to a collating circuit 300 of a control network (Fig. 7) which (a) actuates a shunting bar 203 to sweep invalid tickets off the conveyer 142 to a reject return shoot; (b) operates a ticket clipper 224 to clip valid ordinary tickets; and (c) opens a pair of gate bars to admit a passenger on sensing a valid ticket. The gate bars are closed when the passenger treads on a passage detector. When used as an exit gate a second shunting bar is provided diametrically opposite the first shunting bar 203 and is actuated by the control network to sweep valid ordinary tickets into a storage container (not shown), the ticket punch 224 being locked in the inoperative position. The tickets may be conveyed flatwise through the machine instead of upright, and season and ordinary tickets are diverted to respective outlet slots by pivoted shunting plates or a movable endless belt conveyer and invalid tickets to a reject slot or a storage box. The control network (Fig. 7) includes a delay circuit 330 operating through an " OR " element 301 to reset the ticket machine to its starting condition after a delay time corresponding to the time of passage of a ticket through the machine in the event that a ticket is partly inserted and subsequently withdrawn.
