1,216,402. Automatic fare collection systems. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 18 March, 1968 [10 April, 1967], No. 12948/68. Heading G4T. An automatic fare collection system comprises ticket vending machines 34, 36 for season and single tickets, passenger gates (CT and TT) 26, coin-controlled passenger gate (MF) 26 for vending minimum fare tickets, the passenger gates encoding a ticket with the date, ticket value and entrance station code, an exit passenger gate 30 for determining the fare between stations and permitting a ticket holder to pass if his ticket is encoded with the required value, and a deficit fare collector 32 for displaying the excess fare required and revaluing a ticket on insertion of the required amount, whereby the ticket may now be used to control the exit gate. The vending machines have a fare structure display, a series of buttons corresponding to various ticket denominations, lights which operate on the pressing of a button to indicate which stations can be reached for this fare, a running totalizer display, an escrow unit and a vend button. The ticket is made of durable paper or plastics and includes a magnetizable matrix. Season tickets are coded with the number of journeys allowable for a predetermined fare and this number reduced by one on each insertion in the passenger gate (CT) 26.
