The invention comprises a process for preparing dihydroxyaryl sulphonium salts by adding organic sulphides in a strongly acid medium to 1,4-quinones having no substituent in m-position to a quinone oxygen or to 1,2-quinones having no substituent in p-position to one of the two quinone oxygen functions. The invention further comprises compounds of the formula where X, Y and Z are hydrogen, alkyl of 1-18 carbon atoms, hydroxy, halogen, unsubstituted or substituted phenyl, SR or OR, where R is unsubstituted or substituted alkyl of 1-18 carbon atoms or unsubstituted or substituted phenyl, provided that if 2 of X, Y and Z are other than hydrogen then they are identical and that if 2 of X, Y and Z are hydrogen these are represented by X and Z, or X and Y together are a fused ring, R 1 is an unsubstituted or substituted unsaturated acyclic hydrocarbon, a substituted saturated acyclic hydrocarbon, a phenyl radical substituted by alkoxy of 1-4 carbon atoms or a cycloaliphatic hydrocarbon, R 2 is an unsubstituted or substituted saturated or unsaturated aliphatic or cycloaliphatic hydrocarbon or R 1 is phenyl optionally substituted by halogen or alkyl of 1-4 carbon atoms and R 2 is unsubstituted alkyl of at least 2 carbon atoms, or if R 1 and R 2 are unsubstituted alkyl of 1-4 carbon atoms said radicals are not identical, or if of X, Y and Z at least one is not hydrogen, R 1 and R 2 are alkyl of 1-4 carbon atoms or R 1 is optionally substituted phenyl and R 2 is methyl or R 1 and R 2 together are a chain of 4-6 methylene groups optionally including a hetero atom in the chain and optionally including alkyl substituent groups having 1-4 carbon atoms and M is a monovalent anion; compounds of the formula wherein X, Y and Z are hydrogen, alkyl of 1-4 carbon atoms or halogen, provided that if 2 of X, Y and Z are other than hydrogen they are identical and that if 2 of X, Y and Z are hydrogen these are X and Z, or X and Y represent a fused ring, R 3 is alkyl of 1-4 carbon atoms, n is 3-6 and M is a monovalent anion; and compounds of the formula where X, Y and Z are hydrogen or X and Y are a fused benzo radical, n is 4-6 and M is a monovalent anion.
