Abstract

1,235,683. Selective control systems. DIAMOND H. CONTROLS Ltd. 21 Nov., 1968 [7 Nov., 1967; 8 Feb., 1968], Nos. 50571/67 and 6224/68. Heading G4H. [Also in Division H2] A control system wherein the power supplied to a load is determined by the number of pulses in a pulse train comprises means for generating a stream of regular pulses which are independent of the load power requirement, digital means for providing from the pulse stream a number of separate pulse trains and contactless selector means for selecting and combining the separate pulse trains in combinations which control the power supply to the load. The load may be a cooking apparatus such as an oven and the selector means may be manually operated or automatically operated by a sensor which may be a bi-metallic strip, a pressure-sensitive bellows. Alternatively a motor-driven programming device may be used as a selector means. The power supply to the oven may be controlled by way of a thyristor or a triac the triggering signals for which are provided by the pulses in the combined pulse train, each pulse triggering the thyristor into conduction for one half cycle of the A.C. supply. The regular stream of pulses is generated from an A.C. supply by means of a rectifier, zener diode clipper arrangement together with an inverter-amplifier device, the pulses occurring at the supply frequency at null points in the supply. These pulses are supplied to a plurality of flip-flop devices and AND-gates whereby separate pulse trains are produced each of which has a waveform which is twice as long as that of the preceding train. The separate pulse trains are fed to a contactless selecting device whereby the pulse trains can be selected and combined to produce a pulse train which is used to control the power supply to the load. The selector device may comprise variable transformers, variable capacitors, variable inductors or light-sensitive elements. Furthermore the output pulse train may be arranged to have one interval which does not contain a pulse and this interval may be used for detecting abnormal conditions in the system. An alternative embodiment shows the separate pulse trains derived from clock pulses using shift registers and a flip-flop device.
