Abstract

1,235,513. Stethoscopes. MINNESOTA MINING & MANUFACTURING CO. 4 June, 1968 [5 June, 1967], No. 26625/68. Heading A5R. A stethoscope construction comprises a flexible tubular member which in a normal untensioned condition is of generally U-shaped form with the ends of the legs 1, 2 of the member near to each other or crossed over so that the legs have to be flexed apart for engagement with the ears of the user, the wall of the tubular member being thicker in the direction of this normal flexing than in the cross-sectional direction normal thereto, and there being a tubular stem 13 secured to the bight portion 3 of the tubular member and extending therefrom for attachment to means for transmitting sound from an acoustic pickup. As shown, a stethoscope includes a tubular member of resilient polypropylene having at the ends of the legs 1, 2 ear-engaging members 30 of polyethylene or rubber, the tubular members 30 of polyethylene or rubber, the tubular member being oval, bulbous, or rectangular in cross-section (Figures 8, 9, 10, not shown). An aperture (10') in the bight of the tubular member communicates with the bore of the tubular stem 13.
